As part of my ongoing reconstruction of the Dominy’s wheel cutting engine, I cut a 32 teeth brass wheel or gear. It is based on the dimensions of the second stage wheel in the Dominy’s engine. To do the dividing of the circle into 32 parts, I used a manual dividing plate, which I made in a previous post. Because of this, the dividing was easier than when I figured and layed out the divisions directly on the wheel, as I explored previously.

After dividing, I roughly cut out the slots, cleaned the slots up with needle files, then rounded up the teeth using more needle files. Finally I laid out, cut, and filed the crosses.

I did not show the initial cutting out of the brass wheel and truing up on the lathe. The Dominys would have started by sand casting the wheel out of brass using a wood form, which would have had the voids for the crosses already in it.

I would burnish the crosses, but I do not have a crossing-type burnisher

Next I will be making the final wheel, again using a dividing plate, but not using a compass to scratch the lines in. Stay tuned!
