Clock Mainspring Barrel Repair Exercises: Teeth and Hook

This component houses the main coiled spring and transfers its energy.

First I replaced 4 teeth.

Cutting a slot was tricky because the barrel kept getting in the way of the jeweler’s saw.

The plug needed a step taken out of it on the inside.

Soldering the plug in place.

After filing the top.

Then I used needle files to shape the teeth.

Making a new hook in two ways:

The spring attaches to the inside of the barrel by catching on a hook. I made a new one using two different methods. In the first, I drilled out a hole on the barrel wall then used the lathe to form a plug.

In the lathe I also gave the plug a center hole to help in riveting it on later.

In the second method, I drilled two smaller holes and cut out a tongue using the jewler’s saw. Then I bent the tongue to form a catch.

The original hook is in the middle.
